Healthy, radiant skin is about more than appearance—it's often a reflection of what's happening beneath the surface. One of my favorite treatments for supporting the skin's natural vitality is microneedling. Whether you're hoping to soften fine lines, improve the appearance of acne scars, reduce enlarged pores, or simply restore a healthy glow, microneedling offers a gentle yet powerful way to encourage your skin to repair itself.

Although microneedling has become increasingly popular in the world of aesthetics, its philosophy is deeply connected to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where healing has always centered on stimulating the body's own regenerative abilities.

The Connection to Chinese Medicine

For more than 3,000 years, Chinese medicine has used fine needles to encourage circulation, move Qi (vital energy), nourish blood, and activate the body's natural healing response. While microneedling uses a different type of needle than acupuncture, the underlying principle is remarkably similar: a gentle, controlled stimulus prompts the body to repair and renew itself.

In TCM, healthy skin depends on the smooth circulation of Qi and Blood. When circulation is strong and the body's systems are balanced, the skin receives the nutrients and oxygen it needs to maintain elasticity, hydration, and resilience.

Microneedling creates thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. In response, your body begins a carefully coordinated healing process, increasing blood flow and stimulating the production of collagen and elastin—the proteins responsible for keeping skin firm, smooth, and supple.

Rather than forcing change, microneedling works with your body's innate intelligence, encouraging healthier skin from the inside out.

What Can Microneedling Improve?

Microneedling can be an excellent treatment for many common skin concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and early signs of aging

  • Acne scars and other superficial scarring

  • Uneven skin texture

  • Enlarged pores

  • Sun damage

  • Melasma

  • Mild discoloration

  • Loss of firmness

  • Dull or tired-looking skin

Because the treatment stimulates collagen production, improvements continue to develop for weeks after each appointment.

Why Is a Series of 4–6 Monthly Treatments Recommended?

One of the most common questions I hear is, "Will I see results after one treatment?"

The answer is yes—you'll likely notice your skin feels smoother, looks brighter, and has a healthy glow after your first session. However, the deeper structural changes that improve texture, firmness, and scarring happen gradually.

Collagen doesn't appear overnight. Once stimulated, your body spends several weeks producing and remodeling new collagen fibers beneath the skin's surface. This process continues long after your appointment has ended.

Scheduling treatments about once every four weeks (for 4-6 months) gives your skin enough time to complete one healing cycle before receiving the next stimulation. Each session builds on the collagen created from the previous treatment, creating cumulative improvements that simply aren't possible with a single visit.

I like to think of it like building muscle at the gym or strengthening your cardiovascular fitness. One workout can leave you feeling energized, but consistent training over time produces meaningful, lasting changes. Your skin responds in much the same way.

For most people, a series of 4–6 monthly treatments provides the optimal balance of stimulation and healing, allowing collagen production to steadily increase while minimizing unnecessary irritation. By the end of the series, many patients notice smoother texture, firmer skin, softened fine lines, improved acne scars, and a more even, radiant complexion.

After completing the initial series, maintenance treatments every three to six months can help preserve your results as your skin naturally continues to age. Maintenance is completely optional. Results can last up to five years!

What Happens During Each Appointment?

Knowing what to expect can make your first microneedling appointment feel much more comfortable.

Consultation

Every treatment begins with a conversation. We'll discuss your skincare goals, review any changes in your health or skincare routine, and examine how your skin has responded since your last visit. Because your skin changes with the seasons, stress levels, hormones, and lifestyle, every treatment is individualized.

Cleansing and Preparation

Ideally you arrive to the office with a clean face. I regularly stock the office with cleanser if that is not possible for you. Generally I do not suggest numbing cream, and know that it’s an option if you prefer. A lot of the numbing products out there are full of chemicals that I would rather not microneedle into your skin. Even though we remove it before the treatment, I find there to be residue on the skin. Feel free to reach out and ask questions about this.

The Microneedling Treatment

Using a professional microneedling device, I carefully glide the instrument across the treatment areas. The device contains tiny sterile needles that create thousands of precise microchannels in the skin.

Although that may sound intimidating, most people describe the sensation as a light vibration or gentle scratching feeling. Areas with thinner skin, such as the forehead or around the lips, may feel slightly more sensitive, but the treatment is generally very well tolerated.

The actual microneedling portion typically takes about 20–30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area.

Supporting the Healing Process

One of the benefits of microneedling is that the tiny channels created during treatment temporarily improve the skin's ability to absorb carefully selected professional skincare products.

During the procedure, I used a soothing and hydrating serums applied to calm the skin and support the healing process. These products help replenish moisture while complementing your skin's natural repair mechanisms.

After Your Appointment

Your skin will likely look pink or red afterward, similar to a mild sunburn. You may also experience slight tightness or warmth for the rest of the day.

Most redness fades within 24 to 48 hours, although healing time varies from person to person.

It is extremely important that you protect your skin with a mineral sunblock in the following days post treatment. Ideally you are wearing sunblock daily. I have a mineral sunblock in the office so that you can leave protected.

During the next several weeks, your body quietly gets to work. Fibroblasts produce fresh collagen and elastin, new skin cells replace older ones, and your skin gradually becomes smoother, firmer, and more resilient. This is why the most significant improvements often become visible several weeks after treatment—and why each monthly session builds upon the last.

A Holistic Approach to Healthy Skin

In my practice, skincare is never just about the surface.

Sleep, stress, hormones, nutrition, hydration, and overall health all influence how our skin functions. Microneedling fits beautifully into this whole-person philosophy because it doesn't simply cover up concerns—it encourages your body to do what it was designed to do: heal, regenerate, and restore balance.

Whether combined with acupuncture or offered as a stand-alone treatment, microneedling is a wonderful way to support your skin's natural renewal while honoring the wisdom of Chinese medicine.

Beautiful skin isn't created in a day. It's cultivated over time through consistent care, thoughtful treatment, and supporting the body's remarkable capacity for healing. A series of 4–6 monthly microneedling sessions provides that opportunity, helping you achieve healthy, glowing skin that reflects wellness from the inside out.
